Events Schedule for May 1st, 2014 thru September 6th, 2014

We have moved our “Fire Power!” program from a monthly rotation to a quarterly rotation  March 1st, 2014, June 7th, 2014, September 6th, 2014. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

 Musket Demonstrations: Every Friday and Saturday until September 13th, 2014 we will have Musket Demonstration at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Learn about a Civil War era musket’s history, loading procedures and firing at Port Hudson SHS. Meet at the visitor’s center.

Artillery 101:  Ever wonder how Civil War soldiers loaded their cannons? Now you can find out. Every Saturday in May a Port Hudson SHS staff  member will give instructions and demonstrate how to safely load and fire cannons. These demonstrations will be held at 10:00am and 2:00pm at the museum.

 Fire Power! Date: June 7th, 2014  Time: 1:00pm to 3:00pm

The Port Hudson S.H.S. staff and volunteers will conduct demonstrations with Civil War era reproduction weapons.  The program will start with a demonstration at 1:00 P.M., and there will be follow up demonstrations at 1:30, 2:00, 2:30 and 3:00.  The weapons that will be demonstrated are cannons, muskets, rifles, carbines and pistols.

Now you can find out. On June 14th and 21st, 2014 a Port Hudson SHS staff  member will give instructions and demonstrate how to safely load and fire cannons. These demonstrations will be held at 10:00am and 2:00pm at the museum.

The Surrender of Port Hudson: July 5, 2014  Time: 10:00am

“Having defended this place to the last extermity, I now surrender it into your hands” This commemorative event will be a reenactment of the July 9, 1863, surrender ceremony of General Franklin B. Gardner’s confederate garrison to General Nathaniel P. Banks’ Nineteenth Army Corps.

These demonstrations will be held at 10:00am and 2:00pm at the museum.

Fields of Valor: Medal of Honor Winners at Port Hudson:   August 2, 2014  Time: 11:00am

The Medal of Honor is the Highest award for valor in action agaisnt an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. This program is designed to indroduce the participant to the thirteen recipients that were awarded the medal during the military campaign against Port Hudson.
