First Saturday of the Month Hike
July 7, 2017 Time: 10:00 AM
Join a park historian on a hike of the battlefield discussing, “The Siege of Port Hudson.” This program will last approximately one hour and hike two miles. We will visit several of the scenes of the May 1863 engagement. Program begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Visitor Center. All participants are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Public Lands Clean-up Day
September 30, 2017 Time: 12:30 PM
Volunteers needed! Volunteers with the assistance of park staff will spend the afternoon removing litter and rubbish from the banks of Foster’s Creek. Rubber gloves and trash bags will be provided by the site.

Medicine and Death of a General
November 18, 2017 Time: 9:00 to 5:00
During the Civil War, both sides were devastated by battlefield wounds, disease, and illness. Nurses, surgeons, and physicians provided care to the sick and wounded. Today’s program is about Civil War medicine and the “fever” death of South Carolinian Confederate General John B. Villpigue at Port Hudson.
Native Guards Battlefield Tour
February 17, 2018 Time: 10:00 AM
In honor of Black History Month, a Port Hudson historian will lead a tour of the Telegraph Road area where the 1st and 3rd Louisiana Native Guards fought on May 27, 1863. Program begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Visitor Center. All participants are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
The Siege of Port Hudson Reenactment
March 24-25, 2018 Time: 9:00—5:00
Port Hudson State Historic Site will host the 155th anniversary of “The Siege of Port Hudson,” reenactment on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25, 2018. The standard entry fee will be charged (Note: Park entry fees may be subject to change).
Brought to Light: The True Story of the Horse Soldiers
April 14, 2018 Time: 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM
This indoor presentation and discussion will follow the timeline and events of Union Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson’s April and May 1863 “Butternut Guerillas,” cavalry raid. The raid began just above the Mississippi border in Tennessee, covered 600 miles of hard riding, fighting, and being hunted by thousands of Confederates; finally entering Baton Rouge sixteen days later in triumph and a hero’s welcome.

Battle of Pretty Creek
June 2, 2018 Time: 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM
Did you ever hear of Rackensackers, Buttermilk and Roasting Ear Rangers? This indoor presentation and discussion will talk about the events of Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson’s June 3 –7, 1863 federal raid on Clinton, Louisiana and the Confederate response to this attack.
Priest Cap Battlefield Tour
June 16, 2018 Time: 9:30 AM
Join a park historian on a rare tour of the Priest Cap battlefield. Visit the battle area that was heavily fought over on the May 27th and June 14th, 1863 deadly frontal assaults resulting in thousands of casualties among the Union troops
I have a GGG Uncle who was in Miles LA Legion and died at Port Hudson.
